Strawberries and Cream

Guess what?????

In 10 days (provided that everything goes to plan) we will offically be home owners :)

After looking at around 100 hovels we've found "the one", a place we can make a home.

It's a 1930's bungalow style weatherboard villa on a 600 sq metre section with a nice wee vege patch and more than enough room for a dog.

It does have a bit of quake damage but nothing too major; the brick fire wall fell down so that needs replacing and it will be plaster & painted throughout but EQC have already arranged to do all of that, all we need to do is choose the paint and eventually we'll renovate the bathroom but all in all I'm pretty happy with it.

What was your first home like?? Or what would you want your first home to be like?

Ahoy There : Secondhand Sunday 9

032 (2)

My apologies for going awol for the past few days, it's been a busy week!

I've had meetings with the bank, a broker and real estate agents among other less fun distractions but I won't bore you will all the irrelevant details.

Long story short, our mortgage has been approved!! :)

There are 2 houses that we're considering - we're going back to have another look at them tomorrow and then it will be decision time.

But all that aside, today was a good day. I went to the Riccarton Market to get some farm fresh veges and some cinnamon mini donuts and I also found this gorgeous wee tea cup set for just $2.

How was your Sunday??

When our city fell

This is February 22 2011.

It's hard to believe but today marks the 1 year anniversary.

At 12:51pm a horrific 6.3 magnitude quake struck my home town, Christchurch, killing 185 people and impacting the lives of everyone.

It wasn't the largest quake, that was a 7.1 on September 4 2010 at 4:35am, but it was by far the most devastating.

We lost our home, like many others, and lived in a friends' garage for 6 weeks until we could find somewhere to live, which at the time really was a struggle.

Clean running water, a functioning sewage system and having your loved ones close are the only things that really matter in life.

So where are we today?

We've had over 10,000 aftershocks since February alone, some more serious than others; when will they stop? Who knows. Will they ever stop? Perhaps not.

The CBD is still in the "red zone" which has been cordoned off for a year (parts of which have been cordoned off since the first quake in September 2010)

There are many buildings still air marked for demolition and the "re-build" is yet to really begin. Sure, some progress has been made, but at this stage it's all baby steps. It will be a long time, maybe 10 years, until this city can walk again.

Our favourite breakfast cafe around the corner has just been condemned, and many more buildings just like it and the flat that we're currently renting will eventually be bulldozed - the bricks have come off one side of the building, the foundations have come off the piles and there are cracks in every single room, it is "severely structurally damaged" but safe to inhabit which sounds like a total contradiction but that is Christchurch today.

Why am I still here? I'm not really sure. All I can say it that home is where the heart is and mine is still here.

I know this sounds like a lot of doom & gloom but I think it's important to remember and to appreciate that whilst it's a long, slow process, eventually we will have a revitalised city that will be an exciting place to be.

I have hope and I'm looking forward to our future.

Have you ever experienced a life changing event or natural disaster??

Tobacco & Leopard

I had planned to do a recipe post today since you've already seen this dress recently, but then the rain started and when I got my umbrella out I decided that they matched up too well not to share it.

I usually wear coral or red lippy but today I thought I'd try an orange hue and I think I might have to wear it a bit more often. Sometimes I wonder if red is a bit too much for during the day so perhaps this could be my new go to colour.

Do you have a signature lip stick or do you wear lots of different shades??

Hint of Pink

Today is a good day. I've just had a nice cup of tea and a yummy chocolate muffin, the sun is shining and all is well.

We have an appointment with a mortgage broker tomorrow afternoon, wish me luck!

Secondhand Sunday 8

Last time I wore this combination I was in Paris.

Today was another day looking at open homes - 13 open homes. Most were complete crap.

So I stopped at the op-shop that's about 10 minutes from my house on the way home, I needed a wee pick me up so when I found this cute little chinese bowl & spoon set for $3 I had to have them. I didn't want today to be a complete waste.

The house that we considered renovating sold at auction last week :(
We're seriously considering an offer on the nice little place we liked but have to wait until we have finance in the pipeline.

I know buying your first home is supposed to be exciting but I feel more frustrated than enthusiastic.

Do you love or loath house hunting??

The Lady in Red

Allow me to introduce my first ever on-line purchase.

I brought it from asos and I couldn't be happier with it! It fits like I had hoped it would and I thought $80 NZD for a 57% wool blend coat was the bargain of a life time. If I brought one here I'd be looking at least $300, more likely more.

Although I'm very pleased with my new coat I'm not altogether sure how I feel about the whole on-line shopping thing.

I still don't like that I can't try it on before I hand over my hard earned cash and I really don't like the wait for it to arrive!! I much prefer the instant gratification of spending my moolah in person.

However in saying that I really like that whilst everyone else in Christchurch is wearing the same thing from the same chain store brands (since most of the small businesses closed post-quake) I have something different.

Do you prefer to shop online or in the flesh? Why?

Go Mod

Who said you can't wear black with brown? Whoever they were I think they were wrong, I happen to love black with brown.

The 60's would have to be one of my favourite eras when it comes to fashion.
I LOVE mod style shift dresses, colour blocking, swing coats, go go boots and lashings of eyeliner.

Which era is your favourite for fashion? And why??

Addiction Fix

030 - Copy

Another day, another dollar.

Every girl has a weakness has always been shoes, especially chunky shoes.
So when I saw these at The Warehouse for $39 a pair I couldn't help myself and then I hid them so my man can't find them like the dirty little addict that I am.

What's your weakness??? Do you hide things too???

Think Pink

Whilst we don't celebrate Valentines Day I can't think of a day that would be more appropriate to post pink!

My man hasn't got a romantic bone in his entire body so I certainly don't expect this year to be any different to any other.
Don't get me wrong, I love him to pieces but it's not because he sweeps me off my feet with romantic dinners and heart shaped gifts.

He has brought me flowers once, an enormous boutique of beautiful red roses and you know what my reaction was...."What have you done?"
So it's pretty safe to say it'll never happen again. Well done me.

Do you celebrate Valentines Day? What are your plans?
